Preparation work for final piece.

I have started to combine prints as like the contrast in the composition. Here I wanted to expand on the idea of view point and contrast. I gave the figure a textured, cut out background which stands out compared to the smooth clean background of the museum.

Here I wanted to demonstarte the difference in height, during a visit to the V&A therefore i created a lino cut of school children pointing up to a tall statchue. To enhance this fact I carved vertical directional lines to emphasise on the reaching up aspect.

Here I practiced the same technique just used different colours, to see if it affected the mood, or made it look more clear cut.

At the begining of this project I wanted to focus on communication, therefore after looking back through my sketch book i wanted to incorporate these first ideas into a print. I used a lino cut of the children from the v&A and then carved a new one with a tree trunk and a letter box. This print ties in nicely with combining outside location, V&A and also communication.

This is one of my favourite prints as scale and view point has really been manipulated. I took a drawing from the bedside location and enlarged the teddy bear in comparison to the small child reaching out. Again here I used the technique of directional lines to enhance the reaching moment. I really like the colour choice in this print as I wouldnt normaly put these two shades next to each other but I think they work well.

For my final prints I want to perfect this idea, even with the same lino cuts just create the correct combination of prints and colour. I would like to create a print that represents each location, the V&A, bedside and road side. I would like the prints to focus on scale and contrast. Simple prints with simple composition but effective.

New Idea SCALE!

After visiting the V&A I want to base my project on scale. Further more exploring the raltionship between the artifact, antique or Junk and the figure. My first print based from this idea is a small girl looking up at a sculpture. I really like this print due to many reason. One being the composition, I think it works well with the amount of negative space. Secondally the fact you cannot see the top or the whole sculpture just expressive that feeling of scale of the sculpture compared to the small girl. I also really like the colour, its plain, clean and I think effective. I am going to explore this idea furtehr and keep the prints simple but explore composition as I think the result could be interesting!

More Lino Prinitng

I have various ideas for this project however not a solid one. I am thinking of putting a narrative to connect the 3 locations. A story of a child documenting the 3 location throught a journey to the V&A. I have many possible sketches i could turn into prints to create this story however i think i need to re-visit the V&A to gather more research that can finalise my ideas. However here are some more Lino pritns that are based on sketches from the V&A, I think I can experminet with lino more and get some good prints.
I really like the different textures that have been created in this lino print, however I think  the colour is the best aspect.

Open Screen Printing

As this was my first time screen printing I experimented. Firstly with mixing colours and creating different patterns. In this print it almost looks like a lady with her back to us with long floaty hair!

Here I used different colours to create a pattern which was inspired by an sculpture of a key from the V&A.

More experimentation with different colours, I actually really like putting these colours togther as it is unsual I would use these colours togther in other circumstances.
I really enjoyed experimenting with basic open screen printing, I think some really creative results can be achieved through this process and maybe in a future project I would like to explore this methos again.

Etching

During this session I created 11 prints. Each one I tried to push further with different techniques forcing myself to experiment with media. This print is based from some ornaments I saw when i visited the v&a and i decide to use them as starting point in this project to start fueling ideas. First of all I just created a plain transfer of the image.
I then added some cross hatching to experiment with creating a background and different texture. I also started to experiment with amount of wiping and what effect this caused. I realised that not much ink needs to be removed to make the print a slightly lighter tone. I also wanted to emphasise the communication between the two character and one way to do this was to highlight the passing of the letter, I achieved this by wiping all the ink of the center of the image, therefore creating a focus point.

After experimenting with the different shadows and tines that could be achieved I wanted to create more of a tension, communication and focus on the type of communication between these two opposite characters. Therefore i cut the images out and carried out a few prints displaying then back to back, in the foreground and background. I also went onto changing the object that was being passed from a paper to an envelope and then finally a bunch of flowers. By doing this Icompletely changed the visual language. From one that could be a rent bill be passed across from the rich landlord to a possible romance. I also started adding details onto the different materials to separate them.

I then pushed this further by experimenting on a letter. However this letter was improvised i could develop this in the project by printing on old letters of discarded letters. So this was simply a test.

Finllay I finished the day with producing more of a themed outcome. By emphasising the romance between these tow possible characters and turning into a valentines piece. I crossed out the face of the gentleman to symbolise the mystery of receiving a gift from someone unknown. I also added text and learnt about Turing letters back to front so that the transfer can be read.
After this session i feel i have more if an direction to follow in this project. I want to explore the types of communication between people. Furthermore link it with letters that are discarded and contrast it with letters that have sentimental value and then how old letters that an antique. I am also going to look into people receiving and posting letters. I plan to revisit the V&A and other museums to look at antique letters.

Lino Printing

I think i have only done lino prints once before so this session was reasonably new to me. I learnt allot about the technique involved in lino prints. This session I approximately made 5 prints. Once i learned the stages of the printing i started to experiment and change the prints by cutting more parts away to change the image printed.

This is one of my first prints which I based off the design of a key cupboard from the V&A museum. I also wanted to get familiar with the different marks that could be achieved from the various tools.

Here i experimented abit more with creating different thickness of lines, by cutting more away from the lino. Furthermore I was getting more familiar with the visual language that can be achieved from this type of print and thinking about different types of illustration  this medium could effectively applied too.

Finally in this first session i experimented with layering the prints. I also wanted to see if depth could be achieved by adding a different tone of colour. Here i added a grey on top of the orange print. I really like this effect I think it looks like a Shadow or a bit like an illusion. But know i have an idea of what can be achieved I hope to develop this in the future.
